Laura and Almanzo Wilder at their Rocky Ridge home in Mansfield, Missouri.

After such a sad day for my family yesterday, I’m trying to keep busy with pleasant things.  I was looking for a book to read when I came across my copy of Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder.  So here is a pleasant little post!

If I had the opportunity to have lunch with anyone dead or alive, one of the many people I would pick would be Laura Ingalls Wilder. Growing up I read all her books, signing them out of the school and town library many times because we couldn’t afford to buy them. In addition to the books, I loved watching Melissa Gilbert, Michael Landon and the rest of the cast bring the characters to life on TV.  I also think it is quite cool that she was born in 1867 and I was born in 1967.  But that’s me.

One day I as I was working on my family’s genealogy, it dawned on me that I have Wilder’s in my family tree. So for giggles I did some research and found that I really am related to the Little House Wilder’s! I’m not related to Laura, but her husband Almanzo! For one who is quite a fan, this is quite astounding!

I have always wanted to visit places like the Laura Ingalls Wilder Home and Museum as well as other sites, but for me visiting the Wilder Homestead would be much more meaningful.
